Where you conscious at all of the similarities inherent in the game with George Romeo's trendsetting "Dead" trilogy, and did you have to adapt or change anything to avoid appearing too similar in tone or concept?
One of the reasons why I made the movie is, when I played the game, I thought it wore its cinematic influences on its sleeve. You could tell. The first game I actually played was Resident Evil 2, and within the first ten minutes, I was reminded of the Romero trilogy, but it also had plenty of Assault on Precinct 13 in it, and the music is very John Carpenter. The cityscapes were also very Escape from New York. And those are the movies I grew up with, early Romero and Carpenter, so for me it was an opportunity to pay homage to those influences. To do a true adaptation of the videogame, my movie had to remind you of the Romero trilogy, or I wasn't doing my job property. To me, Romero is God! (laughs)

But I also think those movies were made at a different time for different audiences. The last thing I wanted to do was to make those movies again. They've already been done. So you're always going to make something different, something current. And what you could get away with then was different, too. What George did then you could never get past the censors today…

What is the status of Resident Evil 2?
I'm writing it at the moment, it's called Resident Evil 2: Nemesis.

Was the concept of a sequel something you mapped out at the beginning while working on the first film?
I just concentrated on making the best movie I could at the time, but in the back of my mind, if this works, I had a three-movie arc plotted. And because the first movie has done very good business, we'd like to make the second and third movie.

Has any of the original cast signed on?
It's kind of a surprise. Everyone had a great time making the first movie, so I'm sure everyone will come back. You'll just have to wait and see...

Paul Anderson is currently writing a script treatment for Aliens Vs. Predator. [an error occurred while processing this directive] [an error occurred while processing this directive]080102160410 [an error occurred while processing this directive]Interview w/ Paul Anderson [an error occurred while processing this directive]Arrow in the Head just interviewed director Paul Anderson yesterday and got some decent insight into his upcoming projects including Aliens vs. Predator, Resident Evil 2: Nemesis, Resident Evil Deluxe DVD Edition and the Event Horizon Special Edition. Here's some info on RE2:
Are you aiming for a trilogy with the Resident Evil series?

PAUL: Yes, I would like that. I’ve got the idea for the 3 movies mapped out already, they were always in the back of my mind. Now that the first movie did the business it did, the trilogy might become a reality.

On July 26, 2002 with the announcement that Anderson was to work on AVP, 20th Century Fox has pulled out all the stops and wants full attention to this project, and it may have been enough to put Nemisis in production limbo. [an error occurred while processing this directive] [an error occurred while processing this directive]071102134813 [an error occurred while processing this directive]Resident Evil 2 Details [an error occurred while processing this directive]There was a screening of Resident Evil in London last night after which director Paul WS Anderson and producer Jeremy Bolt did a Q&A session with the audience, the main points of interest being:
Resident Evil 2: Nemesis will see the return of the dogs and the Licker from the first film along with 2 new creatures from the games, Milla Jovovich's Alice character will meet Jill Valentine (marrying up the world of the movie with the world/characters of the games), the film will take place over one night in Raccoon City and will be "very Omega Man"; Anderson said he'd be interested to see the response from film certification boards to the violence in the sequel being above ground and set in the real world as opposed to the violence in the original being in an underground fanatsy environment, to which censors in some countries were quite lenient. A role for Jason Isaacs has been written into the RE2 script with another "great death scene" following demises in previous Anderson films Event Horizon and Soldier."
Anderson is currently writing the Aliens Vs. Predator movie. There will be a second edition of the Resident Evil DVD, likely to be a 2 disc set with more extras than the original DVD version, towards the end of the year. It will include an alternate ending. [an error occurred while processing this directive] [an error occurred while processing this directive]070902131512 [an error occurred while processing this directive]Resident Evil 2 Details [an error occurred while processing this directive]Empire Online talked with Director Paul Anderson about how Resident Evil 2: Nemesis is progressing:
"I'm still writing the script at the moment, that won't go into production till next year. The sequel will be Nemesis and it will be set during the same time period as the Nemesis game [partly before and partly after the initial zombie encounter]. So it will be survivors from the movie meet survivors from the video game. We're going to introduce Jill Valentine and Carlos Oliveira from the game and a few little surprises as well. Of course there's the Nemesis himself too, the big dude".
Anderson also confirmed no casting has happened yet and so the various Mira Sorvino rumours are utterly fake. At first I contacted Natasha Henstridge, but with her other projects she wanted to persue, it was impossible to have her for the role. Mira Sorvino is next on my list. I think she resembles Jill alot and would fit the role perfectly as well. I hope everything goes well, and she will say yes to our script. As for the other roles I have in mind. They are not so concrete yet, but I will mention that "Carlos Olivera" from Resident Evil 3(the game) is on my list. Also we can't forget Milla Jovovich and Eric Mabius. The have said yes to the script and will return as well as I mentioned before in my last interview. As far as the story goes, I can't reveal too much, but I will say that Jill Valentine and Alice will never meet in the story. Their will be two seperate stories going on in the movie".

Things seem to be moving quickly with the IMDb listing of October 31st 2003 release date. The director of Resident Evil stated about the sequel that, "We've already got an outline for it. The idea is that the survivors of the first movie hook up with the survivors of the video game, so at that point you have the worlds of the game and the feature actually meeting."

It's unclear whether or not this idea is going to come true though. Plans for Resident Evil: Nemesis is still underway however, although no script has been approved. Countingdown.com has said that Paul Anderson claimed that a new cast for Resident Evil 2 has been chosen. Milla Jovovich will return as "Alice", Gina Phillips from "Jeepers Creepers" will appear as "Claire", and Natasha Henstridge will appear as "Jill Valentine". "Nemesis" will still be played by Eric Mabius. Paul Anderson also has some other male leads for the movie but is not sure if they will say yes to the script. "The characters are so different," Jovovich said in an interview.

Jovovich plays zombie eradicator Alice in Paul Anderson's Resident Evil movie, which is based on the Capcom video game series of the same name. In Fifth Element , directed by her ex-husband Luc Besson, she played Leeloo. "Alice has so much more going on inside her, because she doesn't know if she is good or bad, and we as the audience don't know if she's good or bad," Jovovich said. "So there's a tension that Leeloo didn't have, because we knew she was good."

Jovovich added, "Resident Evil has a lot more action, a lot more of everything, I think. The Fifth Element was this bright, happy movie. Resident Evil is very somber, dark and a little depressing, but it leaves you feeling really good and ready to watch the next one. I'm totally psyched. I can't even explain it. It's so great. I cannot wait for the fans of this game to see this movie."

The next one? Is Jovovich up for more Resident Evil? "Hell, yes!" she shouted. "Not only am I up for more, but we've already got ideas for the next script. Hopefully we'll be able to make it." Resident Evil opened last Friday, March 15. [an error occurred while processing this directive] [an error occurred while processing this directive]030702160854 [an error occurred while processing this directive]RE2 Already in the Works [an error occurred while processing this directive]Today's edition of The Hollywood Reporter says a deal has already been struck between Screen Gems, Constantin Film and director Paul Anderson to create Resident Evil 2. Anderson will return to write and produce the follow-up, but hasn't committed to direct the sequel. Milla Jovovich is presently attached to star in the film. The sequel will reportedly pick up directly after the conclusion of the first film and involve some of the characters from the first Resident Evil. [an error occurred while processing this directive] [an error occurred while processing this directive]030402123432 [an error occurred while processing this directive]Resident Evil 2 Talk [an error occurred while processing this directive]Eric Mabius, who co-stars in the upcoming SF horror film Resident Evil, told SCI FI Wire that he may appear in director Paul Anderson's proposed sequel--even though the first film doesn't hit theaters until March 15. Resident Evil, based on the Capcom video game series, acts as a prequel to the first game.

In a possible spoiler for the sequel, Mabius said in an interview, "This [film] brings us up to above ground in Raccoon City. I'm going to be Nemesis in the sequel. I'll be putting on 30 or 40 pounds and three or four hours a day in prosthetics. This guys has tentacles and all this crazy stuff going on." In the first film, Mabius plays Matt, a character who did not appear in any game. Matt gets infected with the T virus, and the evil scientists take him away, saying, "We want him in the Nemesis program." To play his mutated form in the sequel, Mabius said that he will study the game in which Nemesis appears.

"I prepare to an annoying extent usually, so I'll probably dissect every possible aspect ... of the character," Mabius said. "Obviously, it will be predicated on where the character goes in the script, but I'll gather everything I can about the character [from the game]." Anderson denied that a script was completed. But Mabius suggested it was a done deal. "When Bernd Eichinger, the head of Constantin Films, saw an early cut in December, he wanted Paul to start writing the sequel," Mabius said. "Based on some of the pre-sales alone, Sony is demanding a sequel already. It's pretty exciting and wasn't really anticipated." Resident Evil opens March 15.
